Loose riser repair in Toronto

Not every moving step needs the whole flight taken down. Where the rest measures true and the base under the bottom course is sound, a single rocking tread or a shifted riser can be lifted, re-bedded and tied back in for a fraction of a rebuild. Deciding which you have takes a tape and ten minutes.

  • Whole flight measured before quoting
  • Single course fixed where possible
  • Tied back in, not just re-seated

One Course Or All

When a single tread can be fixed on its own

The test is whether the rest of the flight is still true. We measure every rise, put a level across each tread and check the bottom course for movement.

If the only thing out of place is one course, and the base beneath the flight has not shifted, that course can be lifted, re-bedded on fresh material and pinned back to the one below. That is a few hundred dollars and a single visit.

What rules it out is a bottom course that has settled, because every rise above it has then changed, or rises that already vary across the flight, because correcting one makes the mismatch worse rather than better.

We will tell you which of those you have before quoting rather than starting a small job and discovering the big one halfway through. See what a full step rebuilding involves, how a stair landing affects the top rise, and what wall caps need by comparison.

How It Runs

Four steps to a tread that stops rocking

  1. Measure the whole flight

Every rise and every tread gets checked, because fixing one course only works if the rest of the flight is already true.

  2. Lift the moving course

The affected blocks come up cleanly so the bedding beneath can be seen and whatever caused the movement can be dealt with.

  3. Re-bed on fresh material

New bedding goes in to a consistent depth rather than packing the void, which is what makes the fix hold past the first frost.

  4. Pin it back in

The course is pinned or adhered to the one below so foot traffic cannot walk it forward again over the following seasons.

Do Not Pack It

Why shimming a rocking step never lasts

The instinct with a rocking tread is to pack something under the low corner, and it works for about one winter. Packed material is not compacted material; it consolidates under load, water gets into the gap and freezes, and the tread is rocking again by spring.

Lifting the course and re-bedding it properly takes an hour longer and it is the difference between a repair and a delay. See how uneven pavers fail the same way when they are shimmed, what step rebuilding costs across a flight, and how porch repair deals with the top landing.

Common Questions

Loose riser questions from Toronto owners

Asked on most visits for this kind of work.

Yes, if the rest of the flight still measures true and the bottom course has not settled. If either of those has gone, correcting one course makes the rises worse.
It holds about one winter. Packed material is not compacted, it consolidates under load and water freezes in the remaining gap, so the tread rocks again by spring.
Usually water getting in behind with nowhere to drain, or nothing tying that course to the one below so foot traffic slowly walked it forward.
Around $300 to $700 including the visit. A full flight rebuild runs $900 to $2,500, which is why measuring first is worth the ten minutes.
Yes, because the same blocks go back in the same order and the same way round. Only the bedding underneath them is new.
If the course it is fixed to is moving, yes. It comes off, the step is rebuilt, and it goes back. A rail bolted to a loose course is doing the opposite of its job, so leaving it in place is not the saving it looks like.

The front step riser had come loose and wobbled underfoot. Reset on a proper bed with new adhesive and it is solid.

They found the riser was loose because the landing behind it had sunk. Fixed the landing first, then the riser.

Two loose risers on the back steps fixed in a morning. They also replaced the cracked tread while they had it apart.

Safe steps again for my parents. The crew checked every riser, not just the one I reported.
