Interlock repair in Toronto
Toronto covers a wide spread of housing stock, and the failure pattern changes with it. Central streets have surfaces thirty years old on bases built to a thirty year old standard, while the edges of the city have newer interlock settling into builder backfill that never finished consolidating.
- One crew across the city
- Base opened before a price
- Same stone goes back down
City Housing Stock
Two very different failure patterns in one city
Older central neighbourhoods have interlock laid in the nineties on bases that were considered adequate then and are thin by current practice.
Those surfaces fail gradually and everywhere at once, which usually means a full lift and relay rather than a spot repair, because patching one area next to ground that is about to do the same thing pays mobilisation twice.
Newer parts of the city have the opposite problem: good interlock over backfill against a foundation that is still settling years after the house was finished. That shows up at the garage threshold and along the wall, and it is a localised repair. We read which one you have before quoting.
See what base repair involves, what full restoration comes to, and how porch repair handles settled backfill.
How It Runs
Four steps on an Toronto property
-
Read the age of the surface
Thirty year old interlock and five year old interlock fail differently, and knowing which you have shapes the whole quote.
-
Open a test spot
A small lift shows the base depth, which is the number that decides whether this is a re-level or a rebuild.
-
Fix the cause first
Drainage or base, depending on what the test spot shows. Levelling over an unchanged cause buys two seasons.
-
Relay and close the joints
Your stone goes back to the corrected grade, plate tamped, with fresh polymeric sand to full joint depth.
Winters Here
Why the freeze and thaw cycle matters locally
Toronto runs through freeze and thaw more often than a milder city does, and each cycle is another chance for trapped water to expand under a surface. That is why base drainage matters more here than depth alone, and why a surface that holds water degrades in steps rather than gradually.
See how grading and slope is corrected, what base repair puts back, and how re-levelling costs are built.

Winter and Salt
Why Toronto Driveways Settle After Winter Thaw
Every spring, Toronto property owners find sunken pavers and cracked joints where the surface looked fine in November. Freeze-thaw cycles exploit weak base layers, and snow masks the damage until it melts.

Drainage
Why Toronto Clay Soil Wrecks Interlock Base Drainage
Toronto's clay-heavy soil does not drain, it holds. Every wet spring, that trapped water works its way under interlock bases and starts the cycle of settlement and washout that brings pavers down.

Joint Repair
Why Joints Sink in Older Toronto Interlock Driveways
Most 1990s and 2000s driveways were laid without edge restraint, and the joints have been losing sand ever since. Understanding that migration is the first step toward a repair that holds.
