Paver Replacement

Toronto paver replacement, matched and reset flush

Individual stones break, spall from de-icing salt, or stain past cleaning. Swapping them, or block replacing as some yards call it, is straightforward; matching them is the part that takes judgement, especially on a line that has been discontinued.

  • Match checked before ordering
  • Bedding reset, not just swapped
  • Salt damage assessed honestly

The Matching Problem

Why a paver replacement rarely matches exactly

Two things work against a perfect match. Colour: every paver on your surface has been in the sun for years, and a new one off the pallet is the colour yours used to be. That closes over a season or two but never fully.

Shape: manufacturers discontinue lines constantly, and even a current line is remoulded, so a nominally identical stone can sit a few millimetres off. Where the line is gone, the usual answer is to borrow stones from a hidden area, put the new ones there, and keep the visible field original.

See how discontinued pavers are handled, what happens with stained pavers, and when full restoration makes more sense than patching.

How It Runs

Four steps to a stone that sits right

  1. Check the match first

We identify the line where we can and bring a sample to the surface in daylight before anything is ordered.

  2. Lift without spreading

The damaged unit comes out with extraction tongs so the ones beside it stay bedded and do not shift.

  3. Reset the bedding

The setting layer under the gap is screeded back to the right height, because a new stone on old bedding sits proud or low.

  4. Set and re-sand

New unit tapped flush to its neighbours, then that joint and the ring around it refilled with matching sand.

Match Before Buy

Finding the stone is the hard part, not setting it

Pulling a broken unit and bedding a new one flush takes minutes. The five pages here exist because the matching does not.

Lines get discontinued, pigment batches drift, and fifteen years of weather have moved your existing stone away from anything a yard can sell today. So the order is backwards from what people expect: find the stone first, often on your own property in a spot nobody looks at, and book the swap second. Where nothing matches we say so before the pallet arrives.

The usual answer then is to move a sound unit from a hidden part of the surface into the visible spot, so the mismatched one goes where nobody looks.

See how discontinued pavers are handled, what cracked pavers cost to swap, and how stained pavers are moved rather than bought.

Common Questions

Replacement questions from Toronto owners

Asked on most visits for this kind of work.

Sometimes by line, rarely by colour. The honest approach is usually to move original stones into the visible area and put the new ones out of sight.
Almost always de-icing salt. It is a surface failure, not a crack, and it spreads. Replacing those units without changing the salt gets you the same result.
Oil and rust often yes, efflorescence usually yes, deep organic staining on a porous stone often not. We try cleaning before quoting a swap.
About two percent of the area, stored out of the weather. It is the difference between a matched repair in five years and a visible patch.
Yes, though a single unit costs more per stone because the visit is the same. Most owners have us do all the broken ones in one go.
Sealing darkens a paver, so sealing only the new one makes it stand out more. If you seal, seal the whole surface at once.

Replaced a dozen damaged pavers across the patio and reset them flush with the rest. Colour matched, joints filled, done in a morning.

They kept the original pavers wherever possible and only replaced what was broken. Saved money and the patio still matches.

The crew explained what caused the damage, a snow blower blade, before replacing anything, and adjusted the height of the border to stop it.

Matched a fifteen year old paver from a supplier they knew. Reset flush, re-sanded, and you cannot find the repair.
