Levelling Work

Toronto interlock re-levelling, base corrected first

A settled driveway or patio is almost never a paver problem. The stone is fine; the base under it has moved, washed out or was never compacted properly. We lift the affected area, rebuild the base to grade and relay the same pavers. Some contractors list the same work as paver relaying or a lift and relay.

  • Base opened before pricing
  • Same pavers go back down
  • Cause named in the quote

What Moves

Why Toronto interlock settles in the first place

Three causes account for nearly everything we lift. A base laid too thin or never plate tamped gives way under a car within a few seasons. Water arriving where it should not, usually a downspout discharging on the surface, washes fines out of the base and leaves a void.

And freeze and thaw, which is real here but rarely acts alone: it needs water held in a base that does not drain. We find which one it is before quoting, because a surface levelled over the same cause settles again inside two years.

See how base repair is done, what pooling water does to a base, and why edge restraint matters at the perimeter.

How It Runs

Four steps from dip to flush

  1. String line and measure

We run a line across the area to find how far it has dropped and how far the dip extends past the obvious part.

  2. Lift and stack

Pavers come up in order and are stacked clear so the same stone goes back in the same pattern.

  3. Rebuild and compact

Base is brought to depth with clean stone, graded to shed water, then plate tamped in lifts rather than all at once.

  4. Relay and sand

Pavers reset flush to the surrounding surface, tamped, and the joints filled with new polymeric sand.

Which One You Need

Six kinds of settling, one cause underneath

The six pages under this hub are the same failure showing up in different places. A driveway that has dropped at the apron, a patio that pitches back toward the house, a walkway that lifts a little more every spring: in each case the stone is sound and the base under it has moved.

What changes is the load on top and how the water gets there, and that decides the depth we rebuild to. Start with the page that matches where yours has dropped. If more than one fits, the visit sorts it, because we open a test spot before quoting rather than after.

Start with sunken pavers if it is a patch, a sunken driveway if it is the whole run, and base repair if the ground under it has gone.

Common Questions

Re-levelling questions from Toronto owners

Asked on most visits for this kind of work.

Usually the settled area plus about a foot of sound surface around it, so the new base ties into the old at full depth rather than at a seam.
No. Sand under a paver is a setting bed, not a base. Filling a void with it moves the problem down a season rather than fixing it.
Not if the cause is fixed. If a downspout is still discharging on the surface and nobody moves it, the same square metre will drop again.
About $8 to $12 per square foot for lift and relay, from roughly $800 for a single settled area. Base depth found on opening is what moves it.
A few usually chip, more on older brittle stone. We tell you the likely count before starting and keep the broken ones out of sight lines.
Straight away for a relay with dry sand. If the joints were watered in, keep vehicles off for twenty four hours so the sand sets undisturbed.

Re-levelling done properly: lifted, base rebuilt and compacted, relaid with the original pavers. Flat and still flat a year later.

They named the cause of every dip on the quote. When the work was done, every cause had been dealt with.

The crew lifted only what was needed and blended the relaid section into the rest. No visible seam.

Cheaper than replacing the patio and the result is the same. They said that on the first visit and they were right.
